I grew up reading fairy tales and always wanted to marry a handsome prince and live in a great big castle. Now that I am an adult, I have changed my goals and become far more practical. I now realize that the handsome prince would have very few skills, probably not have a job, and fail to be very helpful around the house. I doubt he’d be able to change a tire, fix a clogged toilet or even change the air filter on the furnace. He wouldn’t have a clue how to light a pilot, clean a cooling coil, or change the oil in the car. Living in a castle would be a nightmare. Most castles don’t include modern plumbing, electrical power or heating and cooling systems. There’s not even screens on the windows, and I’m sure there’s a constant problem with bugs, humidity and air quality. It would be just about impossible to install ductwork into stone walls. Since the prince would be totally worthless, I’d end up chopping down wood and dragging it up all those stairs. I’d then need to build a fire for warmth, which would create fumes and soot. With the high ceilings and wide open windows, the rooms would be difficult to heat, cool and keep clean I prefer my little house with running water, power outlets, central cooling, gas furnace and programmable thermostat. Instead of a handsome prince, I’m looking for a licensed plumber, electrician or HVAC contractor. I want a guy who can handle home improvement and repairs. My idea of happily-ever-after is low utility bills, a queen sized bed and flat screen television.
