The recent wallet thumping I received from the light bill has me pondering.  I have never really paid all that much attention to our HVAC habits. And, maybe it’s time I did.  I am certainly in a financial position to pay the power bill. But, just throwing money away seems the height of counter productive.  I’m all for enjoying the comfort provided by the HVAC heating and cooling system. There certainly won’t be a radical shift to sweating in the summer and freezing during the winter.  But still, there are certainly some bad HVAC habits I can correct if I simply pay attention. I’m afraid I have been lulled into the sense that HVAC heating and cooling is the price we pay for comfort.  Perhaps I can effect that by actually seeing what I’m doing in the moment. I’d prefer to attempt to change rather than blindly throw money out the window. First, I’m going to for sure change the air filter every 30 days without fail.  The HVAC can’t run efficiently if it can’t receive adequate air flow. I’ve also gone through the entire house to be sure all the vents are opened and unobstructed for optimum air flow. I also have made an appointment to have a smart thermostat installed.  My hope is the smart thermostat will stop all the dial yanking and allow the HVAC to be managed more efficiently. Finally, I am going to call the local HVAC company to do something I should have done long ago. The time has been long overdue for me to sign up for an HVAC maintenance plan.  The HVAC tech will come out twice a year to inspect and tune up my HVAC system so it operates at max efficiency. I’m actually looking forward to seeing what the results of my efforts will be.
