After twenty-four years living up north, I was ready to get away from the snow and cold. I packed up and headed south, anxious for sunshine and palm trees. I was totally unprepared for the heat and humidity. I’d never even lived in a place with air conditioning before. I rented a cheap apartment without checking the integrity of the cooling system. Since money was tight, the low rent was all I could afford. The apartment featured a single, window air conditioner that was extremely old. The unit was rusty, clogged with dust, and several of the control knobs were missing. Despite the small size of the apartment, the air conditioner couldn’t keep up with demand. On especially hot days and nights, I had condensation running down the windows, issues with mold growth, and I was constantly wet with sweat. The air conditioner ran non stop, made a ton of noise, and spread a nasty smell. I managed to come up with enough money to add a couple of portable fans, but they simply blew the heat, dust and unpleasant odor around. Unable to sleep at night, and feeling exhausted all day, I really wanted to find a new apartment, but I’d signed a year-long lease. I then started watching for sales on air conditioners at the local hardware stores. I finally got lucky, and was able to purchase a floor model with a slight dent for very little money. Simply adding that extra window air conditioner made all the difference. The new air conditioner is quiet, powerful, and wonderfully energy efficient. Even on super hot days, it maintains perfect comfort.
