Our parents gave each of us a vacation for Christmas. They purchased travel vouchers that could be redeemed during the year for vacation rentals at the beach. We were all excited about it and it gave us something to look forward to after the long cold winter. My sister and I decided to try and coordinate our vacations so we could go at the same time. After checking school and work schedules we planned to go away in the middle of June, just after school ended. This is normally a beautiful time of year and the weather is neither too hot nor too cold. We booked all of our trip three months ahead of time and made one crucial mistake, we did not purchase the travel insurance. The place we booked had a non-refundable deposit of fifty percent but we never even gave it a thought. When the time came for us to go, our area was experiencing a cold weather snap that just wouldn’t let up. We packed our summer and winter clothes because we knew by the water would be even colder. The beach house we had rented said that it had heat and air conditioning so we figured we should make the best of it. When we arrived we learned that space heaters were the only source of heat and we had to hook them all up in one room to keep warm at night. It was awful. We spent the week, sleeping on the living room rug, and shivering at night. Our parents gave us a wonderful gift but it just didn’t turn out as we had planned. Next year I hope they just give me a sweater.
