My brother and I decided to rent a place together shortly after he moved back home following his college graduation. I didn’t mind getting out of my parents’ house, and he didn’t mind having someone else split the rent with him! The apartment he rented out wasn’t exactly perfect, either – there were strange stains all over the walls, cracks in the windows, and no central air conditioning system! Instead, there was a window-mounted air conditioning unit to provide cool air to us. What a joke, I thought – until I turned on the window A/C unit for the first time. Given the small size of the apartment, the window A/C unit worked quickly to cool down our empty apartment before we began moving equipment into it. I was thrilled by the surprisingly high quality of the window A/C unit, and hoped that other surprises would be waiting for me – good surprises of course. Unfortunately there were none, but the window A/C unit provided enough surprises for the following year to make up for it. At one point about two weeks before the summer heat waves were going to start rolling in, we were dealing with the air conditioning system randomly shutting off while it was running. When the apartment complex sent an HVAC repair team to our unit, the technician overlooked the unit and simply said that it was trash. I thought that was ridiculous! What they didn’t say at the time though, was that they were going to replace the A/C unit for us. I was glad that the apartment complex took great care of their tenants, but apparently these window A/C units are cheaper to replace than they are to fix.
