When my son joined the military, I knew he would have a hard time adjusting to being away. He was always a mama’s boy, and never seemed to stray too far from home. He didn’t want to go to college, and he wasn’t interested in any particular trade. He thought he could learn a skill in the military, while saving some money for college. I tried to keep him home, but boys will eventually Fly Away From Home. My son graduated from boot camp a few months ago, and now he is stuck on the other side of the country. He is 2000 miles away from home, but it seems like another planet. Jacob calls home everyday, and he sounds sad and upset. He hasn’t made very many friends, because he is so introverted. Jacob has been very homesick, especially since the weather has been colder. Jacob has never experienced cold and icy temperatures, because we live in a tropical climate. Jacob misses being home, and he is freezing cold. Last week, I decided to send Jacob a care package. I included my famous chocolate chip cookies and blond brownies. I also sent Jacob a small personal heater. It’s only the 49 square inches, but the heater should provide some warmth in Jacob’s room. Even though the personal heater and brownies won’t make things better, I hope he knows that I love him. I think he will get the personal heater and cookies, tomorrow or the next day. The mail seems to take forever, when the military postal service is involved.
