A fireplace is not the greatest heating idea out there, but, for us it is all that have in our home, however the gas heating system came along with the house plus I can’t afford to update it at the moment! My main beef with the existing heating system is that it is not connected to ductwork or baseboards. The heated air simply works and pushes out of a vent plus that is it. My downstairs level can hardly get heated with the one little fireplace. The upstairs level is chilly cold… I have brought multiple space gas furnaces into the house for the upstairs level. I have to keep one in the powder room to stop our pipes from getting too chilly. I need to keep another in our family room plus I also love to have one situated in our main hallway. The space gas furnaces look terrible, but I have to do it in order for our entire house to not think love an ice box. I think if I had a little shack or maybe a nice little house in the south, a gas fireplace would be a feasible heater. It is not really all that powerful, however good plus it looks absolutely nice. Climates that don’t require too much extra heating would be perfect, and when the un-even temperatures get to easily be around 2 degrees though, I don’t absolutely care how our fireplace looks at this point. I want an industrial strength heating system working around the clock to totally keep myself and others warm, however someday our major plan is to get rid of the fireplace plus get a large boiler idea in our whole basement. The boiler should be able to heat our entire house via baseboard… Or maybe one day if I get absolutely overpriced I can hook piping to it plus have radiant floors.
