I inherited this office building from my folks a few years ago, and ever since then it has been my full time job.
This is by no means a complaint, because being the manager here pays a lot better than any other job I’ve ever had.
It is a lot of work, mostly troubleshooting and dealing with complaints from the companies who rent space here, but I must say I enjoy it. Last week I took a meeting with a startup comprised mostly of kids freshly out of college, and they pitched me a neat idea. They are developing new building management system software, and want to adapt it to retrofit older buildings. The way they explained it, the smart building is the wave of the future, and every new high rise construction will be “smart.” If they can prove the viability of taking old buildings and being able to integrate a high end building automation system they might be able to revolutionize the business. I loved their pitch and their enthusiasm but to be totally honest I have no idea what DDc control or IoT security is all about. The only thing that bothers me is that they admit the access control system integration is a bit of a gamble, and it may not work out. For that reason they are not only offering to work on all the control systems integration for free, but offer me some stock in their startup company. I’ve never been much of a gambler, but getting in on this building management system business sounds smart to me.
