Last week I received a letter in the mail from a law firm.

The letter was addressed to me, however the spelling of our name was a little off.

I did not instantly know the company & I nearly threw the envelope right in the trash can. The law firm is situated in another state, & I never heard of that company. The law firm sent myself and others a letter stating that I have a past due account that was purchased by their company. The law firm threatened to sue myself and others if I did not come up with the money at that moment. I never heard of the company that referred the law firm to me. They did not have much information about the debt or the account. They did not even have our social security number correct. They wanted $6,000 from our account, & I did not know what to do. I tried to call a legal law service, but I make too much money for free or cheap help & not enough money to spend money for a lawyer. Honestly, I’m not even sure the account is mine. A roommate of mine tried to steal our identity back in 2005. It could be from that nightmare, but I won’t know until I can perform the research. The law firm threatening myself and others with the $6,000 bill did not want to supply myself and others undoubtedly long to research the issue. I’m going to do our best to find someone that can help. I might go over to the School of Law to ask if there are any students that could help. Maybe some of them could offer a bit of assistance for a low-cost fee.
